A Bored Night Online Turned a Michigan Woman's $700 Win Into $100,000

An 80-year-old Michigan woman was just looking to kill some time one night, and ended up $100,000 richer. The Wayne County winner told Michigan Lottery officials her lucky evening started with plain boredom.

"I was bored one night after my husband went to bed, so I logged on to my lottery account to play some games," she said. "The Firework Fortune Frenzy game looked fun and easy, so I deposited money and started playing."

The luck showed up fast. She won around $700 early on, kept going with her winnings, and bumped up her wager. Then, just as she was about to call it a night, the screen lit up.

"I was getting ready to call it quits and log out when the screen lit up showing a $100,000 prize! I woke my husband up and told him, but he didn't believe me, so I ended up calling the lottery to make sure it was real," she said.

She said the money will go toward a trip and her savings.

It was an online game, not a scratch-off

Firework Fortune Frenzy is one of the Michigan Lottery's online instant games, the kind you play through a lottery account on your phone's mobile app, not a paper scratch ticket from the store. Michigan is one of a handful of states that sell instant games online alongside the scratch-offs on the counter. If you are looking at the physical side, you can browse the state's current scratch-offs on our Michigan page.

Not a bad ending for a night that started with nothing to do. Congratulations to her, and maybe an apology is owed from the husband who did not believe her.
