How to Play

Picking Your Numbers

Choose 5 white balls from 1–70 and 1 gold Mega Ball from 1–24. You can use a play slip or let the terminal Quick Pick for you. Tickets cost $5 per play.

Match all 5 white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the jackpot. There are 9 ways to win. The jackpot starts at $50 million and grows until someone wins.

Megaplier®

Megaplier is included in the $5 ticket price - no add-on needed. Five multipliers (2×, 3×, 4×, 5×, 10×) are randomly assigned at purchase and apply to all non-jackpot prizes. The Match-5 prize ranges from $2M to $10M depending on your multiplier.

Jackpot winners choose a 30-payment annuity (increasing 5%/year over 29 years) or a lump-sum cash option. Both are before federal and state taxes. If 21 or more tickets share a top prize, only the cash option is available and it is split equally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a good time to buy a Mega Millions ticket right now?
At the current $707M jackpot, this is a statistically poor time to buy a Mega Millions ticket. The break-even jackpot (the point where expected value approaches your ticket cost) is around $2.84B. The current jackpot is less than half that threshold. Every drawing is independent, but if value matters to you, waiting for a larger jackpot makes mathematical sense.
What is the current Mega Millions jackpot?
The current Mega Millions jackpot is $707M. The cash (lump sum) option is $308M, which is the pre-tax amount paid immediately. The advertised jackpot represents the annuity value paid over 29 years. After federal withholding (37%) and state taxes, actual take-home on the cash option varies significantly by state. Use the ScratchCheck jackpot analysis tool for a state-by-state breakdown.
When is the next Mega Millions drawing?
Mega Millions draws on Tuesday, Friday at 11:00 PM ET. The next drawing is Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Tickets must be purchased before the cutoff time in your state, typically 15–60 minutes before the draw.
What are the odds of winning Mega Millions?
The overall odds of winning any Mega Millions prize are 1 in 24.0. The odds of winning the jackpot specifically are 1 in 290,472,336. Each $5 ticket is an independent event. Previous draws have no effect on future results.
What jackpot size makes Mega Millions worth playing mathematically?
ScratchCheck estimates the break-even jackpot for Mega Millions at around $2.84B (advertised annuity value). At that level, the pre-tax expected value of a $5 ticket roughly equals the ticket cost when accounting for jackpot sharing probability, federal taxes, and the cash option discount. Below that threshold, expected value is negative. This is a pre-tax estimate. State taxes reduce take-home further.
How much of a Mega Millions jackpot do you actually keep?
Federal withholding alone takes 24% upfront, with an effective top rate of 37% applied at tax time. The lump sum cash option is typically 50–60% of the advertised jackpot. Combined, most winners in high-tax states take home roughly 35–45% of the advertised jackpot. Use the ScratchCheck Mega Millions analysis page for an exact state-by-state breakdown including annuity schedules.
