How to Play

Picking Your Numbers

Choose 5 white balls from 1–69 and 1 red Powerball from 1–26. You can use a play slip or let the terminal Quick Pick for you. Tickets cost $2 per play.

Match all 5 white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot. There are 9 ways to win. The jackpot starts at $20 million and grows until someone wins.

Power Play® & Double Play®

Add Power Play for $1 more to multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2×, 3×, 4×, 5×, or 10× (10× only available when jackpot is under $150M). The $1 million Match-5 prize doubles to $2 million with Power Play.

Double Play (available in select states for $1 extra) gives you a second chance to match your numbers in a separate drawing with prizes up to $10 million.

Jackpot winners choose a 30-payment annuity (increasing 5%/year) or a lump-sum cash option. Both are before federal and state taxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a good time to buy a Powerball ticket right now?
The current Powerball jackpot of $544M is below the estimated break-even of $920M. The expected value per $2 ticket is still negative, meaning on average you get back less than you spend. The jackpot is building but hasn't reached the point where the math becomes favorable. A reasonable time to play for entertainment, but not yet optimal from a value standpoint.
What is the current Powerball jackpot?
The current Powerball jackpot is $544M. The cash (lump sum) option is $242M, which is the pre-tax amount paid immediately. The advertised jackpot represents the annuity value paid over 29 years. After federal withholding (37%) and state taxes, actual take-home on the cash option varies significantly by state. Use the ScratchCheck jackpot analysis tool for a state-by-state breakdown.
When is the next Powerball drawing?
Powerball draws on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday at 10:59 PM ET. The next drawing is Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Tickets must be purchased before the cutoff time in your state, typically 15–60 minutes before the draw.
What are the odds of winning Powerball?
The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot specifically are 1 in 292,201,338. Each $2 ticket is an independent event. Previous draws have no effect on future results.
What jackpot size makes Powerball worth playing mathematically?
ScratchCheck estimates the break-even jackpot for Powerball at around $920M (advertised annuity value). At that level, the pre-tax expected value of a $2 ticket roughly equals the ticket cost when accounting for jackpot sharing probability, federal taxes, and the cash option discount. Below that threshold, expected value is negative. This is a pre-tax estimate. State taxes reduce take-home further.
How much of a Powerball jackpot do you actually keep?
Federal withholding alone takes 24% upfront, with an effective top rate of 37% applied at tax time. The lump sum cash option is typically 50–60% of the advertised jackpot. Combined, most winners in high-tax states take home roughly 35–45% of the advertised jackpot. Use the ScratchCheck Powerball analysis page for an exact state-by-state breakdown including annuity schedules.
