The paper stock is designed to tear or distort in a way that visibly damages the ticket when separation is attempted.

The serial number angle has also been attempted. If someone could decode the algorithm that links serial numbers to outcomes, they could identify winning tickets before buying them. Lottery security teams are specifically aware of this attack and the encoding systems are designed to make it computationally infeasible. The serial number encoding gets updated as printing technology and cryptographic standards evolve.
