There is $2.8 billion in unclaimed scratch-off grand prizes sitting on shelves right now

Add up every US scratch-off still holding a top prize of $1 million or more, and the number is bigger than most people would guess: 458 games, 1,125 unclaimed grand prizes, worth about $2.84 billion combined, as of this writing on August 15, 2026. And that counts only the seven-figure prizes. The pool of smaller unclaimed prizes underneath them is far larger.

The biggest single prize still out there is $25 million, and three separate games have one: Massachusetts' $25,000,000 MEGA MONEY, Florida's 500X THE CASH, and Florida's $25,000,000 Gold Rush Multiplier. Below them sit a $20 million prize in Massachusetts and a pair of $15 million prizes in Ohio.

Big lottery states carry the most for the obvious reason that they sell the most games, though it is worth noting how differently the money is spread: California packs $389 million into 25 games, while Michigan spreads a similar-sized pile across 48. A grand prize sitting unclaimed does not make a game a good buy, since the odds of hitting it are unchanged whether one is left or ten. What it does mean is the headline number on the ticket is still live.
