Powerball paid 373 second prizes of $1 million or more since January 2025. Here is where they were sold

Between January 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026, Powerball held 261 drawings. Twelve of them produced a jackpot winner. For the second prize, $1 million for matching the five white balls without the red ball, went to 373 tickets. Here is where those tickets were sold. Figures are from our drawing database, and cover US states, the District of Columbia, and the UK.

The Match 5 prize doesn't have winners every drawing. 122 of the 261 drawings had no Match 5 winner. Another 139 had at least one, and the average across all drawings works out to 1.4 winners per drawing. 71 of the 373 winners had added Power Play, so their prize was $2 million.

A state gets one mark for each drawing in which it sold at least one Match 5 winner, so the April 29 drawing described below counts once for each of its 17 states. The table order tracks population and sales more than anything else. The four most populous states take the top four places, and California produced a winner in 38 of 261 drawings, one out of seven. California's prize is also different. According to the California Lottery, all of its Powerball prizes below the jackpot are pari-mutuel, so a California Match 5 ticket pays a share of a prize pool rather than a fixed $1 million, and Power Play is not sold there.

Winners were sold in 40 jurisdictions over the period. Six of them produced a winner in only one drawing, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Maine, South Carolina, Delaware, and the United Kingdom, where Powerball began selling this summer and produced its first Match 5 winner on August 31, 2026.

The nights with the most winners

The drawing of April 29, 2026 produced a whopping 62 Match 5 winners, 27 of them with Power Play, spread across 17 states, on a jackpot of $143.4 million. No other drawing in the period came close. The next-largest was September 6, 2025, when 18 tickets matched five on the night the jackpot reached $1.787 billion, followed by 11 on September 3, 2025 and 10 on September 1, 2025 during the same run-up.

Big jackpots bring big ticket volume, and more tickets mean more Match 5 winners, but the April 29 drawing shows a second effect. The high winner count traces to the drawn numbers forming a near-straight pattern on play slips, which many players select by drawing visual lines instead of choosing randomly.

As of August 31, 2026 there have been 104 drawings and 142 Match 5 winners in 2026. California leads again with winners in 14 drawings. New York, Florida, and Texas each had winners in seven.

The odds of a Match 5 prize are 1 in 11,688,054 per ticket, about 25 times more likely than the jackpot. For what a ticket returns across all tiers, see what a Powerball ticket actually wins, and for how often the top prize goes, how often the Powerball jackpot is won.

How we did this. Winner counts and states come from the official prize breakdowns for each Powerball drawing from January 1, 2025 through August 31, 2026, as stored in our drawing database. The breakdown names the jurisdictions with a Match 5 winner in each drawing but not how many each sold, so the state table counts drawings with at least one winner in that state. Power Play counts are the Match 5 winners flagged as having the add-on. Odds are the official Powerball figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does someone win $1 million on Powerball?

Across 261 drawings from January 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026, 373 tickets matched all five white balls without the Powerball, an average of 1.4 per drawing. 122 of those drawings produced none. The odds of a Match 5 prize are 1 in 11,688,054 per ticket.

Which state has the most Powerball $1 million winners?

California. It sold at least one Match 5 winner in 38 of the 261 drawings since the start of 2025. Florida did in 25 drawings, New York in 19, Texas in 18, and Georgia in 15. New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Michigan each did in 14. Winners were sold in 40 jurisdictions in that span, including the United Kingdom on August 31, 2026.

Does a Powerball Match 5 winner always get $1 million?

In most states, yes, and $2 million with the Power Play add-on. 71 of the 373 winners had Power Play. California is the exception. It pays all non-jackpot prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, so a California Match 5 prize varies with sales and the number of winners, and California does not sell Power Play.
