Baltimore Grandfather Wins $1 Million on a $20 Triple Red 777s Scratch-Off

A Baltimore grandfather is a millionaire this week after scratching a $20 Triple Red 777s ticket and uncovering the game's top prize. He told Maryland Lottery officials he found the "AUTOWIN 7" symbol, looked at the prize printed underneath, and realized it was worth $1 million.

"It was unbelievable," he said.

The winner who remained anonymous, described by lottery officials as an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, has picked up smaller scratch-off prizes over the years, but this is his first big one. He said he is not sure yet how he will spend the money, admitting he does not have many hobbies, though he might use some of it to have some fun.

He bought the winning ticket at the Wawa on the 2800 block of Rolling Road in Windsor Mill.

About the game he played

Triple Red 777s is one of Maryland's $20 scratch-offs, and it is a good one to hit. The game carries overall odds of 1 in 2.98, which means close to one in every three tickets is a winner of some kind. Most of those are small prizes, but that is a better hit rate than a lot of tickets on the shelf. It launched in the middle of May 2026 with a $1 million top prize.

As of ScratchCheck's latest data, the game still listed four of the five $1 million top prizes as unclaimed. In other words, this grandfather's win does not empty the game. There is still real money left in it. You can see the current numbers on our Triple Red 777s game page, and how it compares to the rest of the state on the Maryland best-odds list.

What happens after a $1 million win

For a prize this size, you do not cash out at the corner store. A $1 million winner claims through the Maryland Lottery headquarters, and a chunk comes out for taxes before the check is written. We break down how much the government takes in how lottery winnings are taxed. And if you ever want to be sure a big ticket is really a winner before you get your hopes up, here is how to tell if a scratch-off is actually a winner.

Wins like this are the reason people keep a ticket in their pocket. A regular Orioles fan, a $20 ticket from the neighborhood Wawa, and a symbol that turned an ordinary afternoon into a million dollars. Congratulations to him!
