His wife had just suffered a heart attack. Then a pharmacy stop led to a $1 million win

A 65-year-old Fayette County man won $1 million on Powerball with a ticket he bought on his way out of a Walmart pharmacy, where he had gone to pick up a prescription for his wife after her heart attack.
The Pennsylvania Lottery presented Tony Corso with a commemorative check on Thursday at the store, 355 Walmart Drive in South Union Township. He spent $20 on tickets for the Saturday, July 25 drawing.
"I was there picking up my wife's prescription. She recently suffered a heart attack," Corso said. He said he walked past the lottery machine on his way out and decided to play. "I like to play when the jackpot gets big."
When he checked his tickets that Sunday morning, one of them came back with a message telling him to see the clerk. "I thought, 'That's strange,'" Corso said. "I threw it back on my counter until Monday came along."
On Monday he checked the numbers online with his wife next to him. "She started saying, 'I can't breathe!'" Corso said. "Then she said, 'Well, I think you're a millionaire!'"
Corso retired in May after running a small tire business. "I didn't really need the money," he said. "But it feels good to have it." He said the prize will help his wife fully retire, and that he is looking forward to time with his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "To me, her life is more important," he said.
Six $1 million tickets that night, and no Power Play on any of them
The winning numbers on July 25 were 3, 4, 24, 36, and 47, with a red Powerball of 17. Nobody hit the jackpot. It was advertised at $613 million for that drawing and kept rolling until a single Illinois ticket won $1.04 billion on August 12.
Six tickets matched all five white balls. Corso's was one of them.
| Prize level | Prize | Winners | With Power Play (4x) | Power Play winners |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 white balls | $1,000,000 | 6 (MI, MS, NC, PA, TX, WA) | $2,000,000 | 0 |
| 4 white balls + Powerball | $50,000 | 25 | $200,000 | 7 |
| 4 white balls | $100 | 596 | $400 | 163 |
| 3 white balls + Powerball | $100 | 1,607 | $400 | 425 |
Pennsylvania is the only state lottery that sends all of its proceeds to programs for older residents, and it cleared more than $1 billion for those programs in the last fiscal year. The check presentation came days after the launch of Powerball Xs & Os, a new add-on game whose first drawing we covered here.
