I've been asked if anyone won a Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot online from a mobile app. People have, and for far more money than most players would guess. The largest lottery prize ever won online in the United States is a $552 million Mega Millions jackpot, and it was bought through a state lottery's own website.
That one went to an Illinois Lottery player in June 2024. Illinois did it again on March 10, 2026, when a woman who asked to be called "Lucky Lady" matched 16, 21, 30, 35, 65 and Mega Ball 7 for $536 million, bought on Illinois' iLottery platform. "Lucky Lady" is the second-biggest online prize in the country.
She nearly missed it. "I didn't even plan to play that day, I had actually tried to buy a ticket online a week earlier, but I forgot to finalize the purchase," she told the lottery. When she went back online for the March 10 drawing she took a Quick Pick and kept selecting new quick pick numbers until her favorite number finally showed up. "Once I saw my favorite number, 16, I stuck with it." Then: "I couldn't believe it. I was shaking and telling myself, 'This can't be real.'"
Two different things get called an app
The Illinois wins came from official state online sales, where the lottery sells you a digital ticket directly through the website or mobile app and the prize is claimed through the state like any other. Roughly a dozen states plus Washington, D.C. do this, Massachusetts being one of the newest, and a Michigan player we covered turned a bored night online into $100,000 on the same kind of platform.
Courier apps are a different animal. Jackpocket and its competitors take your order, then buy a physical ticket at a licensed retailer on your behalf and hold it for you. Those have produced jackpots too. An anonymous Arkansas player won $250.8 million on Powerball in March 2026 from a Jackpocket order, on only their second time using the app, and an Arizona user took $112 million on Mega Millions in January 2025. Jackpocket operates in 17 US jurisdictions and says its customers have won 80 prizes of $1 million or better.
