How long does it take to get your money if you win Mega Millions?

How long does it take to get your money if you win Mega Millions?

For Mega Millions, win a prize under about $600 and you can be paid at the counter of the store that sold you the ticket. Anything above that goes through a lottery office, and the jackpot takes roughly two weeks from the day you hand over the ticket to the day a check is written.

Mega Millions is run across 47 jurisdictions, and each participating lottery has to send its share of the prize pool to the state where the winning ticket was sold before that state can pay anyone. The ticket also has to be validated first. For a jackpot that means a physical inspection at a lottery headquarters.

The wait is almost always the winner, not the lottery

The clock most people care about is not the lottery's processing time. It is how long the winner sits on the winning ticket. Three recent Mega Millions jackpots show the range.

The New Jersey winner waited nearly nine months on a ticket worth $537.5 million in cash. New Jersey law lets winners stay anonymous indefinitely, so there was no rush created by publicity. The Florida winner moved fastest, well inside Florida's 60-day window to elect the cash option.

Each was someone lining up lawyers, accountants, and in some cases a trust, before walking through the door. That order matters, because a trust or an LLC has to be set up before you claim, not after.

The two deadlines that can cost you money

Mega Millions itself says claim periods run from 90 days to one year from the draw date, set by whichever state sold the ticket. Florida allows 180 days for draw games. Miss that window and the prize is simply gone. It happens more than you would expect, and we put numbers on it in how much lottery money goes unclaimed.

The second deadline is quieter and catches people who think they have all year. Florida runs a separate 60-day cash option election period, and the lottery's own winner guide says that a jackpot winner who does not elect the cash option inside it gets paid in 30 annual installments instead. Claiming on day 120 in Florida is still inside the claim window, but the lump sum (cash option) is no longer on the table.

The order that works is to sign the ticket, get financial advice, then claim with time to spare. What to expect at the counter is in what filing a claim means, and what paperwork to bring is covered in the ID and Social Security question.

What actually arrives

Take the annuity and you get an initial first payment followed by 29 annual ones, each 5% larger than the last. Take the cash and you get the jackpot's cash value in one payment, far below the advertised number. Mega Millions is currently advertising a $261 million jackpot against a cash value of $110.5 million, or 42.3%. Powerball sits at 42.7%.

Almost everyone takes the cash option. The most recent Mega Millions jackpot winner did, collecting $344.2 million on an $800 million prize, and the tradeoff is broken down in lump sum versus annuity. Federal withholding of 24% comes off along with state taxes before the money reaches you, and the rest of the federal bill (13%) arrives the following April, since you will fall in the 37% bracket.

Powerball works on the same schedule, with its own state-by-state differences, and we walk through it in how long it takes to get paid on Powerball. Whether you can keep your name out of it depends entirely on the state, as our anonymity guide lays out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive a Mega Millions jackpot?

About two weeks from the day you hand in the ticket. Every participating lottery has to transfer its share of the prize pool to the state that sold the ticket before that state can pay you, and the ticket has to be validated first.

How long do you have to claim a Mega Millions prize?

Between 90 days and one year from the draw date, depending on the state that sold the ticket. Florida allows 180 days for draw games. Miss the deadline and the prize is gone, which happens even with multimillion-dollar tickets.

Can you lose the cash option by waiting too long?

Yes, in some states. Florida runs a 60-day cash option election period, and a jackpot winner who does not elect the cash within it is paid in 30 annual installments instead. The choice is final once made.
