Ohio couple thought they won $600,000 on a $50 scratch-off, it was actually $15 million

A Kent, Ohio, couple won the top prize on the Ohio Lottery's $50 50th Anniversary scratch-off, an annuity of $600,000 a year for 25 years, billed as $15 million, the Ohio lottery said Thursday. The ticket was sold at Circle K #5364, 530 Chestnut St. in Ravenna.

The two have played the lottery together for years, and this time she picked the $50 ticket, the lottery said. She played it when they got home and after they scratched it, neither believed what they saw, so they scanned the ticket with the Ohio Lottery app, which showed $600,000. Only later did they realize it was actually $600,000 a year. They called off work the next day and took the ticket to a regional lottery office to confirm the win.

The couple took the $7.5 million cash option, half the advertised $15 million amount. After 26.75% in mandatory state and federal withholding, they will receive $5,493,750. They will owe another 13% of federal taxes next April. They plan to invest the money and provide for their children. The cash option on these annuity prizes is half the advertised amount, and a Toledo trust that won $1 million on Cashword also took half in cash.
50th Anniversary launched in January 2024 with three $15 million prizes in a run of about 10.2 million tickets, roughly 1 in 3.4 million per ticket. The lottery's release said two top prizes remained as of October 14. Its game page on October 16 lists one, and about 85% of the tickets have sold. If one is left, a ticket bought now has about a 1 in 1.5 million shot at it. Three of the game's twelve $1 million prizes, paid as $40,000 a year for 25 years, are also unclaimed.
The game returns 83.5% of sales as prizes, the most of Ohio's four active $50 tickets, with overall odds of 1 in 3.97. Its ValueScore™ is 57.7, lowest of the four, because most of its prizes are gone. The $50 Millionaire Blowout rates 94.9 with 50 of its 60 $1 million prizes left. A Berea man is among those who have won one.
