The Minnesota Lottery added five scratch-offs to its lineup this week, four with holiday themes and a $3 crossword, and all five come with a second-chance drawing for non-winning tickets. The odd one is the $10 game, which pays only two prize amounts.

The name is the total prize pool, not the top prize rewarded. Every win on this ticket is either $50 or $100, five or ten times the price, and there are 197,402 of them, 119,096 at $50 and 78,306 at $100, for $13,785,400 in all. The trade-off is the overall odds. At 1 in 9.92, about nine in ten tickets win nothing. The median for Minnesota's active scratch-offs is 1 in 3.69. It returns 70.4% of sales, slightly above the 70.0% average for Minnesota's $10 games, and rates 67.0 on our ValueScore™.

The lottery describes this one as peppermint scented. A 7 symbol pays the prize shown and a peppermint symbol pays five times that amount. Four $100,000 top prizes are spread over about 2.93 million tickets, about 1 in 733,175 each, with twelve more prizes of $20,000. By our count of its prize table, it returns 68.0% of sales, about even with the 68.0% average for Minnesota's other $5 games.

The cheaper three

Crossword Gold is a $3 crossword in which a gold bar inside a completed word triples the prize, except the top one, and a money stack in the bonus pays instantly. It has five $30,000 top prizes and the best overall odds of the group, 1 in 3.50, and at 64.3 it rates first of Minnesota's nine $3 games.

Naughty or Nice comes in two versions. On the naughty ticket a lump of coal pays $20, and on the nice one a money stack does. A present doubles the prize, and the top prize is $10,000, five of them. Gift Tag Series, the $1 game, tops out at $500, with 90 of those. An elf pays the prize shown and a WINALL symbol pays all six prizes on the ticket. Both rate first among Minnesota's games at their price.
