A limited liability company (LLC) has claimed a $10 million top prize on the New York Lottery's Ultimate Cash scratch-off.
Gaetakro Limited Liability Company of Lagrangeville, in Dutchess County, took the cash value rather than the $10 million annuity and received a single payment of $4,420,300 after required withholdings. The ticket was bought at the Hudson Plaza Price Chopper at 2585 South Road in Poughkeepsie.
Why it was claimed through an LLC
New York publishes the names of its lottery winners instead of letting winners be anonymous. A player who would rather keep their name off that list can set up a legal entity like an LLC and have it claim the prize, which puts a company name on the public record instead of a person's. That is what appears to have happened here, and it is one of the few routes available in a state that does not otherwise allow anonymity. Why the winner didn't get the full $10 million
The advertised $10 million is the annuity, paid out in $500,000 annual installments over 20 years. Choosing the lump sum instead means taking the cash value of that annuity. Federal and New York State withholdings then come off the cash value, and New York has one of the higher state tax rates in the country, which is how the published number lands at $4,420,300.
