A second UK player has hit Powerball's £1 million prize

A ticket sold in the United Kingdom matched all five white balls in Monday's Powerball drawing, making it the second British winner of the game's £1 million prize since Powerball went on sale there in July.
The winning numbers on September 21 were 2, 7, 9, 17, and 58, with a red Powerball of 20. The UK ticket was the only one anywhere to match the five white balls. No ticket hit the jackpot. The Powerball jackpot climbs to $332 million for Wednesday in the US and to £175 million, paid over 30 years, in the UK. Because of the time difference, The National Lottery lists the drawing as Tuesday, September 22.
The first UK winner at this level came in the August 31 drawing, sharing the round with a New York ticket. Since the UK launch, 27 drawings have produced 39 tickets matching five white balls. Two were British.
The prize is set in pounds, not dollars. A US ticket that matches five white balls pays a flat $1 million, or $2 million with the $1 Power Play add-on. A UK ticket pays a flat £1,000,000, which at Monday's exchange rate of $1.3395 comes to about $1.34 million. The UK also takes no tax on gambling winnings. An American Match 5 winner, by contrast, loses 24% to federal withholding before any state tax.
| Where the ticket was bought | Prize | In US dollars | After federal withholding |
|---|---|---|---|
| US, standard $2 play | $1,000,000 | $1,000,000 | $760,000 |
| US, with Power Play ($3) | $2,000,000 | $2,000,000 | $1,520,000 |
| UK, £4 play | £1,000,000 | about $1,339,500 | about $1,339,500 (no UK tax) |
A UK ticket also costs more, at £4 a play versus $2 a play in the United States. The odds of matching all five white balls without the Powerball are the same on both sides of the Atlantic, 1 in 11,688,053, because the UK draws from the identical 5 of 69 plus 1 of 26 matrix.
Below the top prize the two versions part ways completely. The UK runs its own prize table, and on Monday it paid out as follows.
| UK prize level | Winners | Prize |
|---|---|---|
| 5 white balls | 1 | £1,000,000 |
| 4 white balls + Powerball | 0 | none won |
| 4 white balls | 20 | £777 |
| 3 white balls + Powerball | 33 | £533.70 |
| 3 white balls | 1,286 | £35.70 |
| 2 white balls | 20,835 | £8 |
In the US the same drawing produced eight $50,000 winners and six $100,000 Power Play winners at four white balls plus the Powerball. US prize levels are fixed amounts, and each one is laid out here.
